Emollients such as plant oils and fatty acids fill the gaps between skin cells, smoothing texture. Occlusives form a light seal that slows water loss overnight. Getting more from a moisturiser

Apply hydrating products to slightly damp skin — humectants pull water from whatever is available, and on bone-dry skin in a dry room that can mean drawing it up from deeper layers rather than sealing it in. Layer thinnest to thickest, and finish with something occlusive if your skin still feels tight an hour later. Hot water and long showers strip lipids faster than most people expect; lowering the temperature does more for dry skin than adding another product.
