Choosing well

Read the daily serving rather than the amount per capsule — a product may intend two or three. Look for the chemical form as well as the nutrient name: magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide are not interchangeable. On botanical products, the standardised extract ratio tells you the concentration; a milligram figure of raw plant material does not. And note the country of production, which Swiss brands specify explicitly where it applies.

Format usually affects convenience more than effect, with two exceptions. Fat-soluble vitamins — A, D, E and K — absorb better in an oil base or with a meal containing fat. And powders and drinks allow doses measured in grams rather than milligrams, which matters for collagen, magnesium and some botanical extracts.

Food supplements are intended to complement a varied diet, not replace it. If you take prescribed medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are buying for a child, speak with your doctor or pharmacist first — several botanical preparations and high-dose vitamins interact with common medicines, and some nutrients are harmful in excess. Persistent symptoms warrant a doctor rather than a supplement.
