Most people in Switzerland do not need a broad multivitamin. A varied diet covers the majority of requirements, and taking everything at once mostly produces expensive urine. Where supplementation genuinely earns its place is narrower: nutrients that are hard to obtain from a particular diet, ones the Swiss climate limits, and periods — pregnancy, growth, recovery, older age — where requirements rise.

The ones that come up most in Switzerland

Vitamin D — between October and March the sun angle at Swiss latitudes is too low for meaningful synthesis, regardless of time spent outdoors. This is the most widely relevant supplement in the country.

Vitamin B12 — dietary sources are almost entirely animal, so a plant-based or largely plant-based diet needs a supplement rather than benefits from one.

Iron — worth testing before supplementing rather than taking speculatively; excess is harmful and the symptoms of deficiency overlap with many other things.

Magnesium — salt form matters more than dose. Citrate and bisglycinate absorb better and sit more easily on the stomach than oxide.

Zinc — competes with iron and calcium for absorption, so space them apart if you take more than one mineral.

Fat-soluble and water-soluble

The distinction matters practically. Vitamins A, D, E and K dissolve in fat, are stored in the body, and absorb best taken with a meal containing some fat — which is why they are usually sold as softgels. Because they accumulate, dose matters more, and more is not better. The B vitamins and vitamin C are water-soluble: not stored, excreted in excess, so regular daily intake matters more than dose size, and timing is flexible.

Reading the label

Check the stated daily serving rather than the amount per tablet — a product may intend two or three. Look for the chemical form as well as the nutrient name: magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide are not interchangeable, and neither are cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin. Note the country of production, which Swiss brands specify explicitly where it applies.
